Renovation at St. Bricin’s Park, Dublin
Home for a young musician.
This mid-century end of terrace house was purchased in a dilapidated state. The ground floor was completely starved of natural light, mostly due to a bedroom extension that had been added to the rear of the existing house. The proposed design involved the removal of the ground floor bedroom but the retention of its outer four walls. The structural modifications necessary to reconfigure the house left downstand beams from the ceiling. As well as highlighting the original room layout, these helped to inform the new open plan zoning. The bedroom extension became a generous kitchen/dining area, the sitting room was retained as is and the old kitchen became a snug for playing music. Interior design by Emily Cunnane of Inspace introduced bold colours for these different zones. The architectural modifications included fully glazed doors to the back wall to increase light and provide unobstructed views to the garden. The side gable window was increased by lowering the window sill and a rooflight was added at the junction between the extension and the existing building to bring additional natural light into the sitting area in the centre of the house.
